The company has secured an Awards for All (Big Lottery) grant to buy a Tramper all-terrain wheelchair, complete with trailer to be used behind a car. The project has also been supported by a Visitor Pay-Back scheme run by Three Fishes Restaurant in Great Mitton, part of the Ribble Valley Inns Group.
This will be available to members to provide - and market - a service to their visitors and customers who have limited mobility. This is particularly attractive to family and other groups where one member is unable to join the rest in a ramble in the countryside.
The project is based on the success of the Wyresdale Wheels cluster in the Scorton/Bleasdale area.
The company will insure it and has a budget (partly from Awards for All and partly from Lancashire Green Tourism project) for marketing the scheme. The 3 Fishes restaurant at Great Mitton has also helped by raising £8,000 in donations from their guests to support the scheme. There is a promotional leaflet showing current and planned Tramper Trails in the AONB area. The scheme is already included in the latest edition of Discover Bowland.
The board has agreed a Usage policy as follows:
For the purposes of this policy, "Host" refers to the BEx member who arranges the use of the Tramper for a visitor/customer and "Driver" refers to the person who will actually use the Tramper
The Tramper will only be used on agreed trails. Directions and maps are available as downloads from the AONB website. These are updated from time to time as new trails are introduced or existing ones amended. In some circumstances, the vehicle may be used on the Host's own land subject to a risk assessment survey.
There will not be a 'hire' or 'rental' charge to avoid complications over invoicing, VAT, administration, etc. Instead, Users would be asked to make a "minimum donation" for the use of the Tramper. This will contribute towards insurance, maintenance, delivery and management of the project.
The Host will be required to make the donation (to Bowland Tourism Environment Fund) of £15 per day (£75 per week) for the use of the Tramper. It is up to the Host whether the Driver is asked to make (all or part of) the donation.
Hosts must be BEx members and must have received the induction and risk assessment training.
